Bobby "Sureshot" Stiles Memorial Award
January 3, 1934 - July 3, 2012
I've known Bobby Stiles for about 45 years. Don't ask me to bring home the milk this morning and expect me to remember this evening, but my long term memory is still pretty good.
After saying this I can, with my hand on my heart, say that I've never seen Bobby mean to anyone and despite some pretty poor Curling shots, the most I ever got was a finger..... pointed at the broom on my next attempt.
Bobby was a great Curler as he was also a great Human Being. I think he had a secret weapon in Curling.... Every one was so fond of Bobby they didn't mind so much when they lost to him.... Well that's how I always felt! He was a man of exceptional generosity in deeds and spirit.
"Treat others as you wish to be treated". It's an old axiom but a very true one and it worked very well in Bobby's case. He enjoyed winning (who doesn't) but he was gracious to the team he had just beaten in just the same way as he would be gracious in defeat... Didn't happen that often, fortunately.
I'm sure he must have lost his temper sometimes, but in all the years I have known him, I never saw it. He was always there with a chuckle and a witticism when we were walking off the ice, even after losing.
I feel very privileged to have known him and to have enjoyed his company and I'm sure that everyone who ever knew Bobby well will feel the same way that I do.
God Speed Bobby, you are Remembered and Revered.
